I believe that the image I chose for
teacher’s choice was just right. The
students seemed very enthusiastic and wanted to share their comments throughout
the discussion. In Yenawine’s article on
image selection for the beginning viewer, he speaks about what one should
consider in choosing artwork. Bearing this in mind, I chose the image for the
following reasons: accessibility,
expressive content, narrative, realism, painting, genre, and key artists. It’s an inviting
and accessible image, where the
students noticed the signage, a food stand, a beach or desert environment, and an ocean in
the background, to name a few.
I feel like the students where hitting on the
idea of the artist’s intention by the
end of the discussion. This more complex thinking was offered after students provided visual cues as to what might be
happening in the scene. In this way, I
feel like they were able to scaffold towards this deeper thinking. This really surprised me, and I was happy
that the student brought up that the image might be imaginary. I found this fascinating because Theibaud
works primarily from his imagination! I would definitely use this image again in a
similar class of students, because their seemed to be “room” in the image for
them to wonder about. Theibaud does an excellent job of creating an atmosphere with recognizable details that are not overbearing. I think that the
painting allowed them to gather just enough information to be visually
intrigued, and the classroom seemed to be buzzing at the end of the discussion
with continued interest.
I agree that this image was "just right" for the students and that they were getting VERY close to the artist's big idea in the discussion. I was quite impressed by the student comment about it possibly being a mirage; also the comment about the strangeness of an "open" sign, but no attendants at the stand. Thiebaud definitely gave these students room to wonder!! GREAT choice that was clearly based you your understanding of Yenawine's recommendations!!

ReplyDeleteAs I commented on your feedback form, great job with this discussion! I agree with you and Mary about the suitable image choice...the students had a lot to talk about. Like you mentioned, it was nice that the setting and imagery contained a nice balance that was both recognizable and ambiguous. I am very impressed that the students were starting to think about the artist's intention; VTS has obviously allowed them to grow a lot as viewers. I also noticed a lot of agreeing and disagreeing in your video, which I think is a great sign of engagement!
